Low-back pain is the world’s most disabling condition, with tremendous amount of socioeconomic consequences. Depending on cause and severity, back pain symptoms are treated with physical (physiotherapy, massage) or pharmacologic (NSAID, opioid) interventions, with surgery restricted to debilitating degenerative disease that is non-refractory to conservative management. While these treatments may reduce pain in some cases, they do not address the pathologic mechanisms of disease and outcomes are often tenuous. The co-branded ISSLS-ORS symposium will present, 1) the latest development of accurate and specific markers to detect and follow disease; 2) how pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment methods can be evaluated in preclinical animal models; and 3) current clinical phenotyping and treatment options.
Working in partnership with the ORS ad hoc Education Committee and the ORS Spine Section, the results/expected outcomes of this symposium will be multifaceted. For example, we anticipate an understanding and increased awareness of the aforementioned, cross – multi-discipline discussions, collaborations, innovation, promotion of new research lines etc. In addition, the symposium will be video recorded and made available on the ISSLS website for educational purposes. A potential article of the symposium will be drafted for journal publication. Members from both the ISSLS ad hoc Education Committee and the ORS Spine Section may develop special theme/focus issues with a peer-reviewed journal (e.g. European Spine Journal, JOR-Spine, Global Spine Journal, SPINE, etc) on the aforementioned low back pain topic.
