Low back pain (LBP) is the largest cause of morbidity worldwide, but the intricate interplay of factors contributing to LBP, spanning genetics, environment, cellular responses, and social and psychological influences, remains incomplete. Unraveling this complexity necessitates a unified, interdisciplinary effort that draws expertise from clinicians, computational scientists, geneticists, cell and molecular biologists, microbiologists, and bioinformaticians.

This symposium features speakers from the EU-funded ITN Project "Disc4All", which applies innovative approaches for integrating computational simulations in both basic science and translational medicine, using intervertebral disc degeneration and LBP as its focus application. The lineup represents the core areas of (a) computer simulation, (b) cell and molecular biology, and (c) genetics within the Disc4All project, ensuring that most members of the diverse audience at ISSLS will find content that resonates with their interests, while also expanding their knowledge through exposure to other facets of this multifaceted research endeavor. We anticipate that this symposium will create a more profound understanding and heightened awareness of:

  • Effective strategies for seamlessly integrating computational simulations into translational medicine
  • The benefits of incorporating computer models and simulations into intervertebral disc fundamental scientific research.
  • The challenges and accomplishments associated with navigating interdisciplinary research
  • The transformative potential of ITN projects in shaping the next generation of researchers
